The Challenge: Several years ago, FC created an award winning site for the City of Corpus Christi that provided much needed online services and information for citizens. Recently the city came to Farenthold with a tall order. Create a new site with a redesigned layout, that contains full CMS (Content Management System) capabilities such as a page manager, file manager, user authorization and a host of other features to control all aspects of the site.
The Solution: When designing the site, the first thing we did was to pay close attention to the content layout and navigation. Due to the substantial amount of information that already existed coupled with new information to be added, we created the navigation to display a large number of links arranged by color coding and position.
Another priority for the City of Corpus Christi was the ability to keep the site fresh. We included numerous features on the homepage to accomplish this goal, which include images of the city that refresh every time the page is viewed, quick links, current information menu, an e-services section, and an online survey, all of which can be edited by the administrator, which brings us to the backbone of the site, full site management.
The CMS side of the city site is extremely robust and intuitive. Administrators can log in using a secure password and control multiple sections such as admin permissions, which in turn allows departmental administrators partial editing features and access rights depending on the settings given to them. These functions allow the main administrators to distribute much of the work of updating the website, without compromising its uniform look and overall security. Once in the CMS administrators can adjust the site in numerous ways. From creating new pages that are automatically displayed as links to setting the day and time a web page will activate is as easy as clicking a button. Since the debut of the new site the City of Corpus Christi and Farenthold Consulting have received great response from citizens using the site and administrators who make updates.
